Does one have to pay taxes in the Village of Delhi, NY?

I am a taxpayer in the Village of Delhi, NY.

Property taxes in New York are, probably, the heftiest in the nation.

Where I live, I have not only a village tax, but also a town tax and a school tax.  It amounts to thousands of dollars per year.

And I am not delinquent.

Yet, there are people who choose simply not to pay any taxes in this village - and get away with it FOR YEARS!!!

At this time, according to the Village's own Board minutes of July 2014, $102.166.76 is owed in taxes from only 12 delinquent property owners, where:

5 out of 12 are corporations (!);

1 out of 12 is a SUCCESSFUL local trial and appellate attorney who continued to actively generate income, according to public court records, over the 8 YEARS that he did not pay Village of Delhi taxes, but used Village of Delhi services - at the expense of other, paying property owners, and obviously at my own expense.

Thomas Schimmerling owes the Village of Delhi, for 8 years, according to the Board minutes, $14,456.35 !!!!

And isn't it a significant disciplinary violation for an attorney not to pay taxes of such an amount for so long?!

The other property owner who is delinquent for 8 years is Steven Salerno.  The village did NOTHING in these 8 years to enforce its rights or to collect taxes from Steven Salerno or from Thomas Schimmerling.

I will update this blog with more information about the delinquent property owners when I have time.

So - the questions remain.

Do we need to pay taxes in the Village of Delhi?

Why do we have to support the Village of Delhi public officials if they do not do their job in collecting taxes?

Why do we have to support the Village attorney if he and his firm has done nothing in 8 years to collect taxes?
